Our Story

Melvita is a brand of Imkerij de Traay, which was established in 1977. What started as a hobby with some hives, grew into a true beekeeping business in a few years and soon there were more than a hundred hives. The business grew and grew and in 1996, the beekeeping and honey hatchery moved to an organic farming area on the IJsselmeer, in Lelystad. Here, in the Flevopolder, we still process Melvita honey.

Our passion is processing high-quality honey. But we also love the various flavours honey has to offer, for every moment of the day and for various applications. We therefore select the best quality honey and the tastiest flavours. We also work with traditional beekeepers who take into account the environment of people, bees and plants. The combination of experience from our traditional apiary and modern honey processing ensures the high quality of our honey. You taste the care of the beekeeper!

In 2021, De Traay was acquired by Belgian company Meli N.V. Together, we are now one of the largest honey processors in Europe.

Quality and processing

We only process honey that meets the highest quality standard and processing

We test the honey for colour, odour, colour, taste, moisture content, diastasis, HMF (freshness of the honey), adulteration and microbiological, among others.
We check our honey for presence of pesticides and antibiotics and other residues.
An independent laboratory checks whether there is enough pollen in the honey for us to be allowed to name the type of honey (e.g., Acacia or Forest honey).

After quality approval, the honey can be processed. This involves successively emptying the drums of honey, passing the honey through a filter system and filtering out product foreign materials (such as bees). In the process, pollen and important nutrients are retained. This results in a semi-finished product, which is again tested for odour, colour and taste, among other things.

Once everything is approved, the honey goes to the filling department, where it ends up in the jar or bottle. The final product undergoes another critical check and then the honey can go to the shops. So nothing is added to our honey. The beekeepers we work with meet high standards and are regularly assessed for quality and working methods. So enjoy our 100% natural honey.
